"The 100 Best-Selling Albums of the 70s" (as of 2004)

The ranking of the 100 best-selling albums of the 1970s listed below is based upon
the number of platinum and multi-platinum sales awards each album has achieved, as
certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In an industry not
always noted for the accuracy of published sales figures, these awards provide one of
the most effective and reliable ways to measure sales success. The figures represent
minimum sales for each album -- each platinum award represents sales of at least
1,000,000 units -- but they do provide a consistent way to rate the relative position
of the decade's best-selling albums.

These figures also have the advantage -- unlike similar lists based on chart position --
of showing album sales from the date of first release right up to when this list was
compiled in 2004, meaning the success of an album such as Pink Floyd's Dark
Side of the Moon, which has sold consistently well in each decade since its
release in 1973, is properly reflected in its position. Compilation or greatest hits
albums are not included in this list, although live albums and original soundtracks,
where all of the songs have been collected together or recorded specifically for the
album, are included.

Where two or more albums have the same sales total they are arranged by the date
of release, with the most recent album released ranked highest, since its sales are
stronger relative to time spent on the market.

The list is based on US album sales. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI)
certification scheme only dates back to 1973 and was for much of the decade fairly
haphazard. The record companies themselves did not always release sales figures
and where figures do exist they are rarely up-to-date. However, the sheer size of the
US album market relative to that of other regions means that the list does give an
accurate picture of the decade's best-selling albums internationally.

Realistically, anything released in 1979 (The Wall, Off the Wall, etc) should not be included here, as those albums did not see the bulk of their sales in the 70's, and are not part of the "70's experience" such as Tapestry, Zeppelin IV, Yellow Brick Road.

I know many hate this band & don't even respect them, but Kiss have more gold albums than Any other American band. If you actually research & get the facts, Not 1, 2, 3, but 4 (Four!) of their albums should be on this list, Especially their breakthrough 1975 album KISS Alive!, which sold over 9 million copies & should be around #13 on your list. That album started a trend for Many top rock artists to release live albums After it, including The Eagles, Led Zep, Peter Frampton. & Meatloaf, all whom also like And respect, just to name a few. That album, along with their 1976 classic Destroyer- which sold over 3 million copies & should be on the list as well, have received praised reviews even from hated critics like Rolling Stone magazine. Their albums Love Gun (sold 3 million) & Rock n' Roll Over (sold 2 million) should also be on this list. You can hate them all you want but you can't deny their success & Facts! Oh, & 1 other classic you left off- Cheap Trick's Live At Budokon- sold over 3 million copies, should be on here as well. & probably a few others I'll realize later.

you left out the Eagles Greatest hits

Compilation/greatest hits albums are not included in the list.

It's an album I never needed to own myself but I guess every group has its share of casual fans, even hugely popular ones like the Eagles.

Shannon Phillips

Yes, there is a greatest hits LP included. "So Far" by Crosby Stills & Nash.

superseventies (Moderator)

I believe the author considers So Far to be more of a "Best Of" compilation than a strict "greatest hits." The trio (or quartet) had 6 top 40 hits in 1969 and 1970, and the first one, "Marrakesh Express," isn't included on So Far. The album's "Deja Vu," "Hopelessly Helping," "Wooden Ships," "Find the Cost of Freedom," "Guinnevere" and "Helpless" were never A-side "hits" in the US, however "Hopelessly Helping" was the B-side of "Marrakesh Express"; "Helpless" was the B-side of "Woodstock"; "Find the Cost of Freedom" was the B-side of "Ohio"; and "Deja Vu" was the B-side of "Our House."

Mike

Fragile by Yes also sold 2 million. So did American Beauty by the Grateful Dead and Meddle by Pink Floyd.

-----

JeffO

Rush's album sold 3 million ?

-----

R.K. Simpkins

The biggest omission here is the LP Tubular bells by Mike Oldfield

LuckoftheIrish

This lists sales as of 2004. So unfortunately this list doesn't accurately reflect how things were at the end of the 70s. Rumors and Saturday Night Fever being at the top of the list.

superseventies (Moderator) (Apr. 2022)

I have added a shorter list for sales as of 2015, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin just switched positions at the top.
