 Looking Back On 'Little House'

The beloved 19th century rural set family drama turns 50.

By JP Mangalindan in People

Melissa GilbertMelissa Gilbert and Michael LandonLittle House on the Prairie premiered five decades ago, but even today it's never far from Melissa Gilbert's mind. The actress starred as the spirited Laura Ingalls on the family drama, which still resonates with both her and fans of the 1974-1983 series. Gilbert's onscreen dad was the late Michael Landon (right, with young Gilbert), who she says "set the tone" for the show. "We were written off as this sweet, gentle show, and it turns out a lot of people were secretly watching and loving it," says Gilbert, 60, who lives in upstate New York with her actor husband, Timothy Busfield, 67, and runs the lifestyle brand Modern Prairie. "When I meet fans now, there's a lot of tears, and they tell me, 'Oh my God, my whole childhood was you,'" she adds. She recalls that formative chapter whenever Busfield puts on the show at home. "That's my childhood and my surrogate family," she says. "I get to revisit them when I watch a rerun."
