Toto musician and legendary session guitarist Steve Lukather, who just released his By Sarah Rodman in Entertainment Weekly Eddie Van Halen famously played solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It," but that's Lukather you hear on the signature guitar riff (and the bass), as well as many of the other parts of Thriller "That's the kind of stuff we did. They call it 'arranging.' Nowadays, you get songwriting credits if you're rolling a joint in the room for somebody. We came up with a lot of the parts in everything we ever played. That s--- wasn't all written out. I kept trying things in the studio [on 'Human Nature'] and Quincy [Jones] let me f---ing go with it." He once asked for, and received, a private concert from Elton John while recording in France "When I asked, we had been recording for a week and there was a few cocktails involved and I had some liquid courage. We were stuck in a house together, so we became friendly. He was really, really nice to me, man. Imagine sitting next to Elton John, saying 'Play 'Levon' for me.' He would f---ing go for it. He'd play the whole song, and really bring it! I'm pinching myself, going 'If my high school friends could see me right now..." On being overwhelmed by the power of Aretha Franklin in the studio "We get there and she's sitting in the middle of the room playing piano -- which she played more on all of her records than you know. She was so good that she'd go for a lick and you'd just go, 'Whoa!' and then look down and go, 'Where the f--- am I in this chart?' You could see the chicken skin on the arms going. Just being in the room with greatness -- I've had those moments many times." He didn't think "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John was going to be a hit "I got there and it was an overdub, so there was nobody else there but [producer] John [Farrar]. He played me the song. I was always the guy making fun of lyrics -- 'Beat It', 'Let's Get Physical' -- and I'd turn it into a sex joke, right? I go, 'Come on, man, really?' He goes 'That's going to be the big one.' I did a few takes, and they picked the best bits and that's the record. It's a multi-platinum single." But what does he know? He didn't think "Africa" would be a hit "White boys from North Hollywood singing about Africa, are you f---ing kidding me, babe? It's been the golden carrot. I'm just telling you: If I say it's not going to happen, clear the walls out for the gold records. Ironically, this Weezer 'Africa' [cover] that blew up has brought us 15- to 20-year-old boys and girls... to our shows that normally wouldn't have been there. We're the tortoise and the hare, and we're the tortoise. Reader's Comments No comments so far, be the first to comment. |
