Congratulations on Your Bundle of Joy! What Are Your Options For Feeding Your Newborn Baby?
Baby’s are a blessing and knowing what to feed them their first few months is very important. New Mother’s face the sometimes difficult decision of either bottle feeding or breastfeeding baby.
If you choose bottle feeding over breast feeding , you shouldn’t feel guilty. It’s perfectly okay! Formulas for infants have gotten much better over the years, especially when it comes to making the ingredients and proportions to that of breast milk.
It has been shown that babies who are breast fed may get fewer infections, but for the most part, babies will not get serious infections in their first month whether bottle feeding or breast feeding.
The best thing for baby is a Mother who is relaxed and comfortable with her choice.
Choosing a formula for baby. If your finances are a factor it’s perfectly alright to pick the less expensive brand. They are all about the same. Being more expensive does not necessarily mean it is better.
You do want to choose an iron fortified formula. If your baby develops an iron deficiency their first year it could cause problems with brain development. Side effects are very rare but could cause constipation, discomfort or gas.
When picking a formula choose one that will be the easiest for you and baby. They come in powders, concentrate and ready-to-feed formula. The different types have no nutritional differences in them. Choose cow’s milk instead of soy milk to start with.
Feeding your baby formula you don’t need to heat it up. Room temperature is fine when prepared. If there is any formula left over from feeding you can store it in the refrigerator until the next time. Do discard after that.
Knowing when to feed baby is important too. Some Mother’s go by a feeding schedule their physician gives them, others let their babies tell them when they are hungry. Your baby will let you know, follow your baby’s lead in regard to his feedings and you won’t go wrong.
Now you have the information on feeding your baby. Congratulations again. You are on your way to having a healthy enjoyable life with your newborn.
